The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a government program that supports people with disability so they can be their best. This involves supports aimed at developing various skills so they have the capacity to participate in everyday life, work, social and community life.

As Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs), we are specialists in the implementation of evidence based exercise and movement therapy to reduce the impact of symptoms of a disability. We utilise our extensive knowledge of the human body to design and implement safe and effective programs for our NDIS participants, allowing them to improve their overall strength, balance, endurance and/or function. Ultimately, this allows them to maintain or regain their independence, improving their self-esteem, ability to participate in various aspects of society and helping them to be their best!

The NDIS has three (3) main avenues of how it can be accessed and how the plans are managed; through the NDIA, a plan manager and self-managed plans. At Motion as Medicine, we can see participants who have their plans either managed by a planner (e.g. Plan Managed) or self-managed. Exercise Physiology can be accessed through the budget areas of Capacity Building: Improved Daily Living or Improved Health and Wellbeing. Should you not have funds allocated to these areas, you can have your plan reviewed.

Accessing exercise physiology is a good decision should you have any goals in your NDIS plan that relate to the following;

  • Overall function strength and capacity improvements or maintenance
  • Activities of daily living capabilities needing improvement
  • Improvement of physical health, mental health and overall well-being
  • Engagement in the community, through social pursuits
  • You have or are at increased risk of developing further conditions that impair your physical functioning
  • Improving independence and decreasing the reliance on others

Navigating through the NDIS can be tricky at times, especially if you are only new to the scheme. We are always available to help if you have any questions about this and how exercise physiology can be part of your NDIS plan and more importantly, help you live your best life.
